“Frederick” is an arrangement of Mr. Douglass’ life using several scenes from “Frederick Douglass- A Biographical Play” by Acie Cargill as well scenes written by Sam Prince, The John Brown scene was co-written with Michael Freas. Mr. Cargill was very gracious in granting permission to use his work. We have also received the blessing of Mr. Douglass’ descendants and they are excited to see this play come to life. It is such an honor to have his family’s support.
Mr. Douglass overcame great odds in the 1800’s as a Black man, from learning how to read as a slave, to escaping from slavery at a young age, to selling more copies of his autobiography than any one else at the time...his story is one that every American needs to see and hear.
We live in a time where his words of equality and that Black lives do matter, still ring true today. His whole existence was about unity and the fair treatment of ALL people. 200 years later this country still struggles with the subject of race and diversity. This is the motivation behind this production: To bring us all together- every culture. To learn what some of us did not learn in school or in history books. To reflect upon the history of our country so not only to never repeat the past, but to come together as one HUMAN race so that the future of our children is bright and racism-free.
